因为中药柜上下左右七排斗（不包括底层的三个四格抽屉），故又称七星斗柜。因其调剂药品，方便易取，找药容易，故又有“抬手取，低头拿，半步可观全药匣”的特点。斗面呈长方形（左右宽20厘米，上下高15厘米），稍微高出柜面（0.2~0.3厘米），四边倒棱，加之醒目规律的黑色隶书药名，使整体斗柜表面布局层次分明，雅致美观，白色洁净，紫红古朴，为历代名家之首选。
